About GATOS

The Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) is an international collaboration bringing together observational astronomers, theorists, and modeling experts to investigate active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their host galaxies. By combining expertise across wavelengths, facilities, and analysis techniques, the collaboration develops and shares observations, scientific results, data products, software, and other resources for the broader astrophysics community. GATOS also provides a framework for collaboration among its members and for developing new approaches to the analysis of increasingly complex astronomical datasets.

Meet the team

Our Research

GATOS investigates the physical processes that connect accreting supermassive black holes to their host galaxies. Using high-angular-resolution observations from facilities such as ALMA and JWST, we resolve the gas and dust surrounding nearby AGN and study dusty molecular tori and nuclear obscuration, gas inflows and outflows, AGN feedback, and the excitation and chemistry of the circumnuclear interstellar medium. Our research also explores shocks, PAH emission, extended infrared structures, and new computational and machine-learning techniques for extracting physical information from spatially resolved observations. Together, these studies connect the parsec-scale environment of the central black hole to the evolution of gas and dust across the surrounding galaxy. GATOS Products

GATOS produces a growing collection of scientific resources for the astrophysics community. The collaboration has published dozens of peer-reviewed studies spanning the diverse science of nearby active galaxies; explore our publications to learn more. Our successful observing campaigns with facilities such as ALMA and JWST have also produced extensive observational datasets and data products. In addition, GATOS develops and maintains open-source software and analysis tools designed to support the interpretation of complex astronomical observations. Together, these products make the results, data, and methods developed by the collaboration accessible to the wider research community.
